  • Sicko

I just went to the release of Sicko a few days ago in Waco theaters. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is unfamiliar with the U.S. health care system, and the myriad of problems that plague it. If you were unaware that Cubans pay 5 cents for medication that can costs hundreds here, nothing to be treated, live 3 years longer on average than Americans, and at the same time have a higher ranked health care system in terms of quality of care received, then this movie may help illuminate things for you.

Many common myths concerning socialized health care are dispelled in the movie as well, especially concerning quality of care received, and the myth of health care "bread lines" and availability of care. It also covers many of the benefits that citizens of other countries consider basic rights, regardless of political persuasion, such as free or nearly-free daycare for children, unlimited sick days ("Who can predict how often they will be sick?"), and guaranteed recuperative time after major illness, with pay (partially covered by the public).

It is definitely one of my more favorite documentaries.

Teaser: Americans fleeing to Cuba and faking marriages to Canadians for medical treatment. Enough said.

About Me

  • The wish for a life after death is only for those who have not lived their life before death. Weigh the promised comforts that your belief in god gives you with what we actually observe in life. Look at your brothers and sisters in despair, without the illusory comforts that the world's religions bring. As you see those hungry children cry, understanding that a single, desperate life is all that they will know, are you now as willing to sit by and idly wait for some paradise to come -- or will you work to make it a reality, here and now with the little time we have?
